Roller Shutter Doors are the cornerstone of the security for many garages and without them working correctly, your home security could be left compromised. That’s why it’s important to keep them working correctly all the time. Now that many of us have extra free time whilst working from home, why not have a go at that long-overdue repair to keep your security up to scratch.
We’re going to look into a number of common issues that can arise with roller garage doors. However, we do advise that for those who have invested in a good roller garage door, you should contact the experts to come and fix any issues. This is advantageous for many reasons such as the wealth of expertise an engineer would have, time saved and much longer-lasting fixes.
Power Source
The first place to always check is the power. Although it might seem obvious, switches can be easily knocked off and cable unplugged, so always start by checking here!
Emergency Release
An emergency release is used when your garage door is not working correctly. This will disconnect the door from the motor and allow you to operate it independently. Check that this has not been accidentally pulled.
Overheating
It is usual for a motor to stop operating when it becomes overheated. If you suspect this is the case, switch off the motor, leave the door for several minutes allowing it enough time to cool down before switching it back on and giving it another go.
Debris
If you’ve had your roller shutter door for a long time or it’s located in a busy location, there could easily be a build-up of debris on the tracks. You should be able to tell from a visual inspection and if you believe this to be the case, ensure the motor is disconnected from its power supply and clean off any dirt that is present. Don’t forget to apply some more grease back onto the tracks once you’ve done this to ensure that your door doesn’t become stuck in the future.
Door Structure
One common problem that can happen is that dents in the structure of the door can prevent it from correctly opening and closing. Check over your roller shutter door to ensure that it hasn’t sustained any damage without your knowledge.
Proximity Sensors
Over time, dust and dirt build upon a number of surfaces, and we can even forget where things are located! Check your proximity sensors to ensure that they aren’t dirty, damaged or obstructed. These could cause problems that are intermittent, causing your roller garage door to open the partway before cutting out or could prevent the door from opening or closing completely.

Garage door maintenance is hugely important. With regular servicing you can ensure that whatever type of garage door you have lasts for a long time, working correctly throughout its life. However, it is important to remember that if you don’t know what you’re doing to call in a professional.
